BRITAIN is set to sizzle in a two-week heatwave with temperatures hotter than parts of the Mediterranean, forecasters said last night.

The mercury could even climb as high as 86F (30C) in some areas and swathes of the UK are likely to bask in the high 20s.

This compares to just 70F forecast for Barcelona and the South of France where it will hit 77F in Nice.

Experts say the hot weather will arrive at the end of this week and last for a fortnight.

The South is once again expected to get the best of the warmth and sunshine, but temperatures will also be pleasant in the North.

The fine forecast is in stark contrast to conditions at the weekend which saw parts of Britain drenched in heavy rain.

Topsy-turvy conditions even sparked a severe warning of localised flooding in the North-east which was hit by torrential downpours.

However, things are looking up for sun-seekers from the end of this week as the balmy summer weather continues through July, according to long-range forecasters.

The Met Office said “more settled” conditions are expected for up to two weeks in the South, with it “feeling more like summer” with temperatures often above average and at times “very warm”.

The Weather Channel has forecast 86F in some parts.

The North will see “near or just above average” temperatures, with a mix of sunny conditions and unsettled spells. Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said: “This week will have a tropical feel to it with humid heat triggering thunderstorms.

Temperatures could reach 81F by the end of the week.

“Unfortunately in the North, they are more akin to early spring or late autumn with the mercury only climbing to 66F. But overall, it looks like we are actually getting a decent summer.”

He added: “Later in July we will have a sustained run of decent, dry weather.” Meanwhile, the weekend rain “curse” struck again yesterday.

Swathes of the country saw heavy showers, with forecasters blaming Britain’s summer “curse” of wet weather at weekends and hot days in the working week.

Getting Hotter

Britain is set for the hottest week of the year so far with the mercury rising to at least 30C (86F), forecasters say.
Temperatures will rise as the week continues , peaking on Friday when parts of the UK will be hotter than Ibiza and Gran Canaria, experts predict.
Sky News weather producer Christopher England said the southeast of England would be hottest, but most other areas should see lots of sunshine too.
Monday and Tuesday can expect temperatures of 24C (75F), rising to 28C (82F) by Wednesday.
Sunbathers will then have to slather on more sun cream, with summer's hottest spell bringing a sweltering 30C (86F) by Friday.
"This should be the hottest period of the year so far," England said.
"The high temperatures will be seen in quite a wide area covering large parts of England."
July 4 saw the year's previous highest temperature of 29C (84F).

Northern England and Scotland will reach temperatures up to 22C (71F), while Wales could see temperatures rise to 26C (79F) by the end of the week.
The warm weather is down to hot and humid air being pumped up from Spain, the Met office said.
