The only common answer is that it's a conspiracy started by the man.

I guess it's kind of the same as putting our garments in a suitcase and our suits in a garment bag.

Or calling what doctors do 'practice', an operating room a 'theatre' and the airport building a 'terminal'

indeed - why do we have so many different variations of what is supposed to be the "english" language

sidewalk - pavement
trunk - boot
pants - trousers

suppose its what makes us interesting and gives us something to laugh and joke and talk about

when I was in Tennerife I took a tour of the island.
It is mountanous volcanic island with 1.5 million people.
They tell you it only gets 3 days rain a year!!
I saw no massive resevoirs.
How do they collect enough water to serve 1.5 million for a year in 3 days and where do they store it?
Just a thought that crossed my mind when i was listening to the commentary on the bus!
