The MAIN problem with this is that a lot of places are starting to use this as an excuse, you know, they say stuff like "in an effort to keep your info safe and help stop abuse of our systems, we need to use your phone number to verify your account" Its all BS there are a lot of other ways they can verify someone, and being that it is so easy to create numbers that you can port to your phone and then later delete , supplying a phone number is hardly a good way of doing this. This is just an excuse, what they are really doing is taking advantage of the gullible folks out there who will supply their actual number and E-mail address which they will distribute to third parties. rivacy is not something they recognise
