Having beliefs that are addictive and therefore not open to improvement can really keep one from becoming more effective spiritually in a world that badly needs people to work harder to improve the messed up spiritual state it is in. Often people would rather be a part of a well established spiritual organization and the comfort and ego/psychological support it provides rather than make an independent effort to develop better spiritual beliefs. God will helps those who are sincerely searching for better answers.
